Dr. Bharat Shah
M.B.B.S., P. G. Dip in Pediatrics, ADNY, Yoga Teacer

Dr. Bharat Shah has worked as a senior resident at KGP Children’s Hospital at Vadodara. There, he worked as a team member at the mental health clinic, for children with delayed mental development. As a full-time pediatrician at SEWA Rural, Jhagadia in 1998, he was involved in developing and executing a community health program to reduce the infant mortality rate (IMR). The program included training the health workers for community based neonatal care and developing the module and setting up of a neonatal intensive care unit at the hospital. The program successfully reduced IMR significantly in the PHC Block within one year of operation.

Although his basic area of work was pediatrics and community health, he gradually found alternate systems of health care increasingly interesting. Consequentially, he completed a diploma in naturopathy and obtained training as a yoga teacher. His deep interest in health awareness and education led him to publish educative booklets on various diseases and a healthy lifestyle. He has also translated a book on medicinal plants that was originally published by the World Health Organization titled ‘The Use of Traditional Medicine in Primary Health Care’.

At present he is working as Director, Nisargopachar Kendra at Vinoba Ashram, Gotri, Vadodara. He is also a member of the advisory committee of Janakidevi Bajaj Nature Cure Centre managed by Gujarat Vidhyapith, Ahmedabad and a member of the managing committee of Shri Morarjee Desai College of Naturopathy and Yogic Sciences, Karelibaug, Vadodara. He has been selected as a member of the syllabus committee for a course on Holistic Health by South Gujarat University. He has also served as a member of the governing council of ‘Foundation for Revitalization of Local Health Traditions’ (FRLHT), a Banglore based organization that has been recognized as ‘A National Centre of Excellence in Medicinal Plants’ by the Government of India.
